What's New

From 1 November 2023, new offences and increased sentences have been introduced under the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2023.

New offences include:

• Stalking or non-fatal strangulation (10 year maximum sentence)
• Non-fatal strangulation causing serious harm (maximum sentence of life in prison)

Certain maximum prison sentences have increased including:

• 7 years to 12 years for assaulting an on-duty Garda or emergency service worker
• 5 years to 10 years for assault causing harm
• 10 years to life in prison for conspiracy to murder
